In a strategy of sustainability of its equipment and energy sobriety, the 4-class nursery school joins the elementary school built 10 years ago in the town.
The thermal performance of the construction is passive in order to avoid the construction of a new boiler room, the architecture is based on bioclimatic design while seeking to improve the conditions of the existing school (yard too exposed to wind and sun)

 

The new construction is located in such a way as to form a square to the South-East of the land, in response to the volume of the existing school, it offers a large south facade open to the Grand Paysage du bocage. The roof overhang forms a cap ensuring summer comfort.
The construction is installed on the slope. The new school is located one level lower than the existing school, constituting a low ground floor level. This arrangement allows the view of the landscape to be preserved from the elementary school. The school's section is designed to ensure air flow (especially nighttime ventilation) and to allow continuous lighting of all teaching and circulation areas. Light autonomy is an asset for energy saving. The whole is built in poplar / straw and raw earth.

 

The project was the subject of multiple participatory approaches initiated by the project owner/project manager duo
• Shared design with residents/teachers/ATSEM/elected officials during round tables to discuss architecture, uses, comfort and pathways
• Manufacture of 3,500 raw earth bricks (adobes) with site soil under the direction of the architects
• Harvesting of 4,000 bales of straw in the surrounding fields, with farmers and teenagers
• Planting of the school's surroundings and greening of the elementary school playground with parents/children/teachers
• Design of benches in a reuse approach (old playground dismantled)
